What happens during Sebaceous cyst removal surgery?
Sebaceous cyst surgery involves the removal of the entire sac of the cyst to minimise any risk of it returning. If it is simply incised and the contents are squeezed out, the sac remains under the skin and there is a high likelihood of it returning.
Removal of the cyst is performed following injection of local anaesthetic. Jonathan will make a small incision in the skin over the cyst to remove the punctum (small hole and track linked to the cyst) and carefully extract the whole cyst. The wound is then closed with fine stitches to enable healing and the best result possible with time.

Once the area is numb, Jonathan will make a small incision in the skin overlying the cyst. The cyst is then carefully dissected and removed from its surrounding tissues, to ensure its complete removal.

Jonathan will recommend you keep area dry for 48 hours and at that point it can be wet in the shower. It is important to avoid heavy lifting or exercise for a few days at least as it may lead to bleeding or delayed wound healing, and a poorer outcome.
Moisturising and massaging are the mainstay of post-operative scar management, while laser and micro-needling can speed up the scar maturation process. It is also crucial to protect the treated area from sun exposure. In case of any signs of infection it is important to seek immediate medical attention.
