Breast Surgery

Body

The breast surgery options we offer here in Chelsea are breast reductions and breast lifts (also known as mastopexy). Breast reduction surgery is designed to decrease the size of large breasts which may be causing symptoms such as neck and back pain and rashes under the breasts. During the surgery, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed to achieve a more proportionate breast size. A breast lift is performed to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Over time, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and aging can cause the breasts to lose their firmness and droop. A breast lift can restore a more youthful and uplifted appearance by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding breast tissue.

What happens during breast surgery?

During your breast reduction surgery, Jonathan will remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to help you achieve a smaller breast size. He will make incisions on the breasts, typically around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease. The excess tissue is then excised, and the remaining tissue is reshaped and repositioned. The nipples are also repositioned to a higher position on the breasts. If you’re having a breast lift procedure, after removing any excess skin, Jonathan will tighten the surrounding tissue to lift and reshape the breasts. He’ll then lift the underlying breast tissue and reposition it to achieve a more youthful appearance. Again, the nipples will be repositioned to a higher position.

Faqs | Breast Surgery

  • Both breast reduction surgery and breast lifts (mastopexy) can be beneficial for those who are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts and associated symptoms. It is important for individuals considering these procedures to have realistic expectations and to have a comprehensive consultation with Jonathan beforehand. He’ll assess your medical history, physical characteristics, and personal goals to determine if you are a suitable candidate for either breast reduction surgery or a breast lift.

  • Jonathan will conduct a thorough history and examination, taking into account factors such as size, shape, symmetry, and overall condition to determine the most appropriate surgical approach to achieve the desired results. He’ll review your medical history and any previous surgeries or treatments that may be relevant, and he’ll explain the different surgical techniques available for breast reduction or mastopexy. Plus, he’ll also provide information on the expected recovery process, including any potential risks or complications that may arise.

  • Your breast surgery will be performed under general anaesthetic. You won’t be conscious during the surgery, and you won’t be in any pain. After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort due to the incisions made and the tissue manipulation. However, the pain is usually managed with prescribed pain medication, and most individuals find that the discomfort decreases significantly within a few days.

  • Breast reduction surgery can take 2 to 3 hours to complete. However, this timeframe can be longer or shorter depending on the specifics of the case. The duration of the procedure will depend on the amount of tissue being removed and the technique used by the surgeon. The duration of a breast lift surgery can range from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the extent of the lift required. Once you’ve had your consultation with Jonathan, he’ll be able to give you a much better idea of the specific duration of your procedure.

  • Breast surgery is designed to change the shape and size of the breasts, as well as address any issues related to sagging or unevenness. For those considering breast reduction surgery, the main goal is to reduce the size of the breasts and provide a lift. A mastopexy, is designed to lift sagging breasts and restore a more balanced look.

  • Risks of breast surgery include bleeding, return to theatre and prominent scars. Over time, these scars often fade and become less noticeable. Another risk that may be associated with breast surgery is a reduced blood supply leading to wounds which have to heal over a period of time. Some women may experience temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensitivity following a breast reduction or lift. Jonathan will discuss all risk factors with you during the consultation, as well as outline the preventative measures that will be taken.

2. Your Treatment

Under general anaesthetic anaesthetic, Jonathan will make incisions on the breasts, around the areola and usually down to the breast crease and along it, to remove the excess tissue. The remaining tissue is reshaped and lifted. The incisions are then closed with sutures, and the wounds are dressed.

3. Aftercare

Follow the guidelines to wear a supportive bra or compression garment as recommended by Jonathan for a period of six weeks. This helps reduce swelling, provide support to the breasts, and promote proper healing. Take prescribed pain medication and avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting to allow the breasts to heal properly.
